WELLER: Before we progress further in our discussion of Fahrenheit 451, I’d like to acknowledge that there are kids here tonight, which bodes so well for good parenting and the fact that there are children out there who want to read. Are you still concerned about the future of reading in America? Where do you see this going?

BRADBURY: It’s got to be the center of our life. A book is more important than anything else. A book is more important than the people you work for. A book is more important than the school you go to—the important thing in school is the book. You take it out of the schoolroom, you take it out in the lawn in front of the school and you read it there. The book is everything. School is not important. The book goes with you. [Applause]
